A router connects the site to a WAN, a gateway joins or controls network segments, and an access point provides Wi-Fi access to an existing LAN.
Draw the network path
Draw the path from the external network to the local devices. Mark where the cellular or wired WAN terminates, where local traffic is routed, and where Wi-Fi coverage is required.
Product names are not always used consistently across vendors. Compare interfaces and enabled functions instead of relying on the category name alone.
Router role
A router connects different IP networks and directs traffic between them. In a cellular installation, the router terminates the 4G or 5G connection and presents Ethernet, Wi-Fi or both to the local network.
Common checks include cellular bands, SIM format, WAN failover, Ethernet ports, antenna connections, power input and the routing functions required at the site.
Gateway role
Gateway is a broader term. A gateway may route between networks, translate protocols, distribute PoE power or manage downstream access points. Its exact role depends on the product architecture.
When a gateway sits behind a cellular router or FWA CPE, the upstream device supplies the WAN connection while the gateway handles local integration and distribution.
Access point role
An access point connects Wi-Fi clients to an existing wired LAN. It does not normally provide the cellular WAN connection. Indoor and outdoor models differ in enclosure, antenna pattern, mounting and environmental limits.
Coverage planning also considers client density, channel use, cable and PoE availability, placement and whether roaming or central management is required.
Compare the roles
The same enclosure may combine more than one role. Confirm what is enabled rather than assuming the functions from the product name.
