FWA uses a cellular radio link for the last-mile connection to customer premises.
How it works
A typical FWA path has four parts: the operator network, the radio signal at the site, the premises device and the local network. The CPE terminates the cellular connection and presents Ethernet, Wi-Fi or both to equipment inside the premises.
Available bands depend on the operator and region. Throughput and stability are affected by signal level and quality, device position, antenna design, network load and the operator service profile.
Where 5G FWA is used
FWA is used for homes, branch offices, temporary sites and locations without a practical fixed-line connection. It can also provide a backup WAN behind an existing gateway or firewall.
Deployment characteristics
Installation requires a compatible operator, supported bands, SIM and APN details, an acceptable radio signal, power and a suitable CPE position. RSRP, RSRQ and SINR measured at the intended location are more useful than a coverage map alone.
FWA versus wired broadband
Wired broadband brings a physical line into the building. FWA uses the operator radio network for that last segment and terminates it in a premises device.
Fiber and FWA therefore have different installation dependencies. Fiber depends on line availability; FWA depends on operator coverage, spectrum, radio conditions and CPE position.

What to check
Record the operator, bands, SIM and APN method first. Then record RSRP, RSRQ and SINR at the intended position, followed by the Ethernet handoff, Wi-Fi area, power source and router or gateway mode.
CPE and router roles
An FWA CPE combines the cellular WAN and premises handoff in one device. A cellular router can serve the same WAN role but may provide a different antenna layout, port count, mounting method or routing feature set. An access point only extends the local Wi-Fi network; it does not provide the cellular WAN.
Before hardware is selected
Confirm the radio conditions and CPE position before comparing throughput labels. The selected model must also match the local Ethernet or Wi-Fi handoff, power source and management method.
