Cellular networks for remote equipment

Connect controllers, meters and cameras to a cellular network where a fixed line is unavailable. Choose the router around the cabinet power supply, local interfaces and remote-access requirements.

Cellular WAN at the cabinet

Connect controllers, meters and cameras to the router over Ethernet. Add a switch when more ports or PoE are needed. Check the installation requirements in the site checklist before choosing a model.

Remote access and maintenance

Decide whether a technician needs access to the router alone or to the equipment behind it. Include the SIM service, operator addressing, VPN requirements and permitted users in the installation plan.

For fault finding, list the connection readings and logs your team needs. For firmware work, agree on the target model and version, maintenance window and recovery procedure before deployment. Access, diagnostics and update functions vary by model and firmware; compare the router software functions before choosing a management method.

The cellular router connects the cabinet to the operator network. Ethernet connects the local equipment directly or through a switch. Remote access also depends on the SIM service, operator addressing and VPN configuration.

Local network

Equipment behind the cellular router

Connect a small number of Ethernet devices directly. Add a gateway, switch, access point or bridge only for the local functions the router does not provide.

Provides the modem, SIM, cellular antenna connections and Ethernet handoff for the site.

Gateway or switch

A switch adds Ethernet ports and, on PoE models, power for local devices. A gateway handles local routing or AP management when required.

Wi-Fi coverage or a building link

An outdoor AP serves nearby Wi-Fi devices. A paired wireless bridge connects a separate building where cable installation is impractical; check the line of sight before choosing the link.
