Keep automatic selection as your baseline. Test one supported change at a time, compare more than download speed, and restore automatic selection if the improvement does not last.
Three controls that are often confused
Check what the setting actually changes. A list of permitted bands does not select one particular tower, and a 4G-only setting is not the same as choosing an LTE band.

When a test is worth trying
Consider a controlled test if the problem is repeatable and you have already checked the SIM plan, router position and wired connection. Record whether the problem coincides with a change in active bands. That observation is a reason to investigate, not proof that a band is faulty.
There is little value in changing bands because someone in another country posted a fast result. The operator, local spectrum, available capacity and supported hardware combinations are different. Keep automatic selection if the connection already meets your needs.
Why a restricted band list can be slower
Carrier aggregation combines compatible carriers to increase the resources available to a device. A narrower allowed-band list can remove combinations that the modem and network would otherwise use. Selecting a band does not reserve capacity for your router.
In 5G non-standalone operation, LTE also forms part of the connection. Restricting LTE choices can affect the available 5G connection. Treat LTE and NR settings as related, and follow guidance for your exact modem and firmware rather than assuming one set of bands works everywhere.
A setting that helps today may stop helping after network maintenance or a change of location. This is particularly important for a vehicle or boat that moves between coverage areas.
Before you change anything
Confirm that your QILTON model and firmware support manual band selection. This article does not establish feature support and is not a substitute for its setup instructions. If the option is absent, ask support; do not install unrelated firmware or paste modem commands from another device.
Use a local management connection, preferably Ethernet. Save the current settings and know how to return to automatic selection without internet access. Do not start this experiment on a router you can reach only through its cellular link.
- Record the model, hardware version and firmware version.
- Save or export the current configuration using the supported method.
- Write down the original radio mode and band settings.
- Arrange a maintenance window if other people use the connection.
Compare automatic and manual selection fairly
First test automatic selection with one wired client and other traffic paused where practical. Record three download, upload and latency tests, the active bands and any interruptions. Keep the range of results, not just the highest number. Check your data allowance before repeated speed tests.
Change only the supported band selection under test. Leave the APN, antenna position and other radio settings alone. Wait for the connection to settle, then repeat the same measurements. Return to automatic selection and test again to see whether the difference survives a repeat comparison.
Try your normal workload too. A small download improvement is not useful if video calls break up or uploads fail. Retest during a busy period before deciding to keep a restriction.
When to return to automatic selection
Restore the original automatic settings if the router loses service, speed falls, latency becomes erratic or the benefit cannot be repeated. Revert the changed setting rather than factory-resetting unrelated configuration. Follow the product recovery instructions if local management is unavailable.
Before moving a fixed-site setup to another area, review any saved band restriction. If you keep one, document why it was chosen and when to review it. Send your before-and-after results to support if the problem remains; they are more useful than a screenshot of one fast test.
