Use RSRP to compare reference-signal strength and RSRQ or SINR to investigate quality. Keep the radio mode and measurement label with each result.
What each reading tells you
Start on the mobile status page, if your firmware provides one. Keep the labels and units when you write down the values. A number without its label is easy to misread.

A negative value does not mean no signal
For RSRP, −85 dBm represents more received power than −105 dBm. The difference is 20 dB; it is not a percentage and does not mean the connection will be twenty times faster. Do not compare a power value in dBm directly with a quality ratio in dB.
A SINR of 0 dB means the wanted signal and the combined interference-plus-noise power are equal for that measurement. It is not a universal disconnection point. The modem, network conditions and radio configuration still matter.
Use any good/fair/poor labels as a rough indication, not a speed guarantee. For an installation decision, repeated readings and actual connection behaviour matter more than crossing one colour boundary in a status display.
A stronger signal can be a worse result
Suppose moving a router closer to a window improves RSRP but reduces SINR. That position receives more reference-signal power, yet the signal is less clean relative to interference and noise. Do not choose it on strength alone.
Try another position and repeat a wired connection test. Keep upload speed, latency and any interruptions alongside download speed. You may find that the position with fewer bars works better for calls or file transfers.
This comparison does not identify the source of interference. It tells you what to investigate next. Changing several settings at the same time makes it much harder to tell whether position, band selection or network conditions caused the difference.
Keep LTE and 5G readings separate
A 5G connection can show LTE information as well as NR information. In non-standalone deployments, the LTE anchor is part of the connection, so an LTE reading is not necessarily an error. Some interfaces use labels such as SS-RSRP for a 5G measurement.
Record the exact label, network mode and active band. Do not compare an LTE reading from one test with an NR reading from another as though only the antenna position changed. Blank or unavailable fields are not zero readings.
If you need help interpreting the display, send the model and firmware version with a redacted screenshot. Do not use a modem command from another product just because the field names look similar.
Keep a short measurement log
Label your candidate positions A, B and C. Use the same router, SIM, power supply and wired computer. Allow the connection to settle after a move, then capture the readings and run the same test. Repeat the original position before deciding the change helped.
If the active band or cell changes, note it. The result can still be useful, but it is no longer a position-only comparison. Repeat at the time of day when you normally have problems.
- Position and antenna orientation.
- Time, operator, radio mode and active band.
- RSRP, RSRQ and SINR, with their labels and units.
- Wired download, upload, latency and any loss of connection.
What to do with the results
If moving the router improves both the readings and the connection, test that location for longer before mounting anything. If reception improves but speed does not, move on to the plan, operator load and local network checks.
If none of the accessible positions works well, investigate a compatible external antenna or a different operator. A coverage map is a starting point; measurements at your site are the useful comparison. Keep the original setup available until the alternative has been tested.
