Compare positions with the same router, SIM and test device. Keep the position that stays connected and performs consistently, not simply the one with the most signal bars.

Record the connection you have now

Open the mobile connection status page, if your router provides one. Note the operator, network mode, active bands and signal readings. Menu names and available readings vary by model and firmware. Do not change the APN or reset the router just to start this test.

Use one computer connected by Ethernet where possible. Pause downloads and cloud backups, then record download speed, upload speed and latency. Run three tests rather than keeping one unusually good result. Speed tests consume mobile data, so check your allowance first.

Look beyond the signal bars

RSRP describes reference-signal strength. RSRQ describes reference-signal quality. SINR compares the wanted signal with interference and noise. For the same measurement type, a less negative RSRP or RSRQ is generally better; a higher SINR is generally better.

Compare readings from the same router and radio technology. LTE and 5G readings may be listed separately. A stronger signal with worse quality is not necessarily an improvement, and no single reading predicts download speed.

Try several positions before mounting anything

Choose a few safe locations on different sides of the building. Test near a window and farther inside the room; the window is a candidate, not a guaranteed winner. Keep the router away from metal cabinets and leave its ventilation openings clear.

At each position, allow the connection to settle before taking readings. Record whether the band or cell changed. Move only one thing at a time: position first, then orientation. Keep the power supply and test computer unchanged.

Do not leave an indoor router outside or in direct sun to improve reception. For a permanent outdoor installation, use equipment rated for the environment and follow its mounting instructions.

Check the best position again at a busy time

Repeat your comparison when you normally use the connection. A location that works well in the morning may still be slow in the evening. If signal readings remain similar while speed changes sharply, investigate operator load and plan restrictions before buying hardware.

  • Record location, time, network mode and active bands.
  • Keep download, upload and latency results together.
  • Check a normal task as well: a video call, file upload or remote session.
  • Retest the original position to check whether the improvement is repeatable.

When an external antenna is worth considering

Consider an external antenna when a safe outside position receives a better connection but the router needs to stay indoors. First confirm that the router has supported external cellular antenna ports. Wi-Fi connectors are not substitutes.

Plan the cable route before ordering. A long coaxial run loses signal; compare antenna gain and cable loss at the frequencies you will use. An outdoor CPE with an Ethernet run may be another option, provided its power and environmental ratings fit the installation.

Leave band selection on automatic for the first test

Automatic selection gives you a baseline. If your firmware supports band selection, treat a restricted band list as a separate experiment, not a universal fix. Save the original settings and test locally, with a way to restore them if the connection drops.

Band selection, cell locking and choosing 4G or 5G mode are different controls. This guide does not assume that your QILTON model supports them. Ask for instructions for your exact model and firmware before changing a remote installation.
